On Tuesday, though, head coach Matt Patricia said neither the option decision nor the other players changed how the team views Davis. With the option declined, Davis is now set to reach free agency after the 2020 season.

"Obviously a great player that I've had the blessed fortune of being around before, and drafting and watching him grow and develop as a player ..."

Davis was the No. 21 overall pick by the Lions in the 2017 draft with a high character grade and terrific athletic traits.

"JD is a cornerstone of what we're trying to do", Patricia said on a conference call, via Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press.

Nation, do you agree with Patricia that Jarrad Davis is a "cornerstone" of that the Lions are trying to do in the future? In 2018, he registered 100 tackles and six sacks. He made a Pro Bowl appearance in 2015 after racking up 89 tackles, 5.5 sacks, an interception and five forced fumbles.

Heading into the option deadline, no one was quite sure which way the Lions would go. He's become a leader on defense and team captain, but his play on the field has been mostly up and down over the last three years.
