A Super Flower Moon and a Meteor Shower Are Happening This Week

As per the Farmer's Alamanac, the Full Moon of May is called Flower Moon because at this time of the year, in most areas, flowers are abundant everywhere. "Because supermoons occur when the moon is at its closest distance to Earth, it can appear up to 14 [percent] larger and 30 [percent] brighter than a Full moon at its longest distance from Earth". It is also known as Full Corn Planting Moon as well as the Milk Moon.

This month's supermoon will be called the Super Flower Moon and this will also be the fourth and the last supermoon of the year 2020.

This week - days before and after the night of the full moon - is best to spot craters on the moon's surface.

The final super moon of 2020 is coming this week. It has been named in honour of the month of flowers and new blossoms.

When a full moon coincides with perigee, the closest point to Earth on the elliptic orbit, it creates a slightly larger-than-usual apparent view, knows to us as the supermoon.

According to NASA, the Super Flower Moon will appear to be the biggest and will have attained peak illumination at 04:15 pm on May 7.

The last of four supermoons in 2020 may peak through the clouds this week.

Some definitions are more strict, but NASA says that the February snow moon, March worm moon, April pink moon and May flower moon all meet the 90% criteria.

The next super moons won't appear until April 27, 2021, and May 26, 2021.

Two meteor showers, the Eta-Aquariids and the Eta-Lyrids, also peak in early May, although NASA notes that the light of the almost full moon will interfere with visibility.

A super moon is a new or full moon that happens at the time of the month when the moon is closest to Earth in its orbit, also known as perigee.
