BBC Plans Three-Hour Fundraising Special ‘The Big Night In’

Comic Relief founder Lenny Henry announced on The One Show tonight that Catherine Tate and Gary Barlow would also be taking part.

"It's going to be a fantastic night. we want to cheer people up in this awful crisis".

All monies raised will be split between Comic Relief and Children In Need to support local charities and community projects dealing with the impacts of coronavirus around the UK.

The three-hour Big Night In, to be broadcast on BBC One, will celebrate people who are making a difference in their communities and feature appearances from a host of celebrities and famous faces.

Alongside the best way, the present will invite donations which is able to go in the direction of weak individuals who have been impacted by the COVID-19 disaster.

The show's organisers say the money will help people stay "safe from harm, mentally healthy and with access to food, warmth and shelter, as well as helping people stay connected, active and positive through these extraordinary times".

The BBC promise a "star-studded" show offering cheer and support to a nation in lockdown, along with live music performances via video link-up. It will "offer some light relief and entertainment, whilst celebrating and rewarding those going the extra mile to support their communities in these troubled times", the BBC said. We're working with the BBC and others to ensure this event is a huge success'. Comic Relief and Children In Need will funnel the cash to local charities on the frontline. "You really won't want to leave the sofa!"

Moore said: "BBC One will bring the nation together for this special one-off live charity event. The Big Night In is the ideal opportunity to praise the heroes who are caring for us, feeding us, and lifting our spirits as we continue to help people most in need". Peter Davey and Colin Hopkins are the Executive Producers for BBC Studios Entertainment. It was commissioned by BBC director of content Charlotte Moore, entertainment chief Kate Phillips and Katie Taylor.

The Big Night In will air on Thursday April 23 at 7 p.m. on BBC1.
