As it mobilizes its supply chain, employees, and partners to provide personal protective equipment to medical workers and others working to stop the spread of the COVID-19 epidemic, Apple has sourced over 20 million face masks and is now building and shipping face shields, according to a statement from chief executive Tim Cook. The Cupertino, California-based company is set to produce over a million face shields through its facilities per week. "We've launched a company-wide effort, bringing together product designers, engineering operations and packaging teams, and our suppliers to design produce and ship face shields for health workers", Cook said on Sunday.

He mentioned that the first shipment of face shields manufactured by Apple was delivered to Kaiser hospital facilities in the Santa Clara Valley last week. They can be assembled in less than two minutes and are fully adjustable. The company is sourcing materials and manufacturing in both the United States and China, Cook said in a video post message on Twitter.

Express Tech is now on Telegram. Apple is working with medical professional sand government officials across the U.S. to determine where the shields are most needed, and is looking to expand distribution beyond the United States soon. The number of cases of coronavirus around the world rose to 1.22 million on Sunday, with the U.S. being the worst affected by COVID-19. "We hope to quickly expand distribution beyond the U.S.".

"This is a truly global effort, and we're working continuously and closely with governments at all levels to ensure these are donated to places of greatest need", Mr Cook said in a video posted on Twitter.

"In both these efforts, our focus is on unique ways Apple can help, meeting essential needs of caregivers urgently and at a scale the circumstances require". In the U.S., the pandemic has killed more than 8,000 people and infected more than 300,000 people. The updates revolve around face masks and face shields, vital tools in protecting medical teams from infection and in preventing the spread of the virus.
