There are now more than 46,000 confirmed cases in the USA, and nearly 600 deaths.

The number of confirmed cases of the new coronavirus in the United States reached 60,115 on Wednesday while 827 people had died, a tracker run by Johns Hopkins University showed.

A total of 1,031 people have died from the novel coronavirus in the country, where there are now 68,572 confirmed cases, the CSSE said.

Pennsylvania avenue, one of the largest avenues of the US Capital, is nearly deserted by traffic during the 6pm usual rush hour in Washington.

The virus has killed more than 21,000 people around the world after it was first identified in central China in late December.

Despite dramatic measures in cities and states across the country that have kept Americans in their homes and shuttered businesses, the US's Covid-19 outbreak is yet to come under control.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said more than 30,000 coronavirus cases have been confirmed in his state alone, adding "we're still on the way up the mountain". The death rate based on reported cases is now 1.2 percent - but the actual number believed to be infected is far higher, which would bring the rate down.
