"I will do everything I can to ensure our dedicated staff have whatever they need during this unprecedented time".

The announcement will be a relief to NHS workers with active permits who will not have to pay for parking in April and May.

NHS workers have been offered welcome financial relief thanks to an initiative that allows them to park for free at more than 900 vehicle parks.

The decision comes after public calls to provide free parking for NHS hospital staff who are working tirelessly throughout the Covid-19 pandemic.

However, NHS staff can now enter their work email address to receive a code that gives them free parking at more than 900 auto parks, with companies such as Morrisons, Atlas Hotels and Grosvenor Casinos offering their locations.

Due to limited space, The East Kent Trust are encouraging those who usually park off-site to continue to if possible or to only use the staff parking areas unless they are told otherwise.

Our NHS staff and social care workers are working round the clock to save lives and should not have to worry about the cost or time restrictions of parking.

"By working together, we are able to support these heroes as they play a front line role in our national effort to tackle the coronavirus crisis".

National secretary Rehana Azam said: "We need a permanent end to the scandal that leaves NHS and ambulance workers paying hundreds and thousands just to park at the hospitals that they work at".

YourParkingSpace.co.uk says that some of the auto parks are very close to hospitals, and that it plans to open the free service to other key service workers.

Mr Jenrick said councils will set up arrangements so those eligible can provide suitable evidence to display in their windscreen and avoid a ticket.

Once again, in response to massive uproar that temporarily made even Piers Morgan look good, the government has moved to eliminate a hugely unpopular thing overnight, with the UK's health secretary waiving all on-site parking fees for NHS staff. Ministers are also urging all businesses and other organisations located near hospitals to work with their local NHS Trusts to consider allowing NHS staff use their vehicle parks.

He said: "I am pleased to announce free auto parking for staff while we are dealing with coronavirus from tomorrow (Wednesday, March 25)".

Cllr James Jamieson, chairman of the Local Government Association, said: "These critical workers are all doing vital and highly-valued work to support the most vulnerable in our society and councils want to do all they can to support them".
