Coronavirus death toll in Spain overtakes China's

As of Wednesday morning, New York City had recorded 192 deaths - almost 100 more than any other county or state in the country.

The global death toll from the novel coronavirus surpassed 20,000 Wednesday, according to figures compiled by USA -based Johns Hopkins University.

There were another three deaths in Majorca, bringing the total number of fatalities in the Balearic Islands to 19.

By continent, Europe has listed 226,340 cases and 12,719 deaths to date, Asia 99,805 cases and 3,593 deaths, the USA and Canada together 57,304 cases with 624 deaths, the Middle East 32,118 cases and 2,119 deaths, Latin America and the Caribbean 7,337 cases with 118 deaths, Oceania 2,656 cases with nine deaths and Africa 2,382 cases with 64 deaths.

Louisiana has also emerged as a hot spot for the virus in the United States.

"COVID-19 is threatening the whole of humanity -- and the whole of humanity must fight back", UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said, launching an appeal for $2 billion to help the world's poor.

In a bid to stem the virus, the European epicenter of the virus has shut down many of its industrial activities including vehicle and clothing manufacturers, real estate, and tourism companies.

The lockdown of Hubei's capital Wuhan will be lifted on April 8, a milestone in China's war against the epidemic as Beijing shifts its focus towards stemming imported cases and rebooting the economy.

Spain's coronavirus death toll jumped by 738 overnight to exceed that of China, where the disease originated, as the country struggled to cope with an accelerating health crisis and another senior government minister was diagnosed with the virus. The total number could be much higher as the government reported 130,000 sick leaves associated with the virus, encompassing workers who are either infected or in preventive isolation. It has 6,820 reported fatalities so far.

Spain is under a nation-wide lockdown and launched a state of emergency since Friday, March 13 and effective for an extendable period of 15 days.
