"Inside the Actors Studio", which debuted in 1994, hosted nearly 300 guests, all Hollywood greats who talked about their beginnings, their career and their craft as part of a master class for students at the Actors Studio Drama School, a program of graduate study from the Actors Studio and The New School. Lipton developed a three-year educational curriculum for performers in the 1990s, and ultimately ended up implementing it at New York's Actors Studio, which was in danger of shuttering at the time, per the Hollywood Reporter.

TMZ reports Lipton passed away peacefully this morning at his New York City Home after battling bladder cancer.

James Lipton only retired from hosting Inside the Actors Studio, in a manner of speaking, in 2018 when the chat series moved from its longtime home at Bravo over to the network Ovation. He also went on to produce television specials. I'm excited to see the new hosts engage with the guests and students and continue to entertain viewers in the USA and around the world. Called Inside the Actors Studio, the first show featured Paul Newman. "I exist. But you may come in anyway'".

"That's what most talk shows depend upon, and that's fine, but with us we're getting together to dig as deep as we can". The show became a hit and made Lipton an Emmy-winner.

One of his favourite interviews, Lipton has said, was with a former student. A young Bradley Cooper in 1999, years before appearing in films like Silver Linings Playbook and A Star Is Born, sat in the audience for a taping of an episode with Sean Penn. He was also famously parodied by Will Ferrell on "Saturday Night Live".

More recently, thanks to the show's success, he returned to acting himself with TV appearances on shows like Arrested Development and voicing an animated version of himself on The Simpsons.

On Inside the Actor's Studio, Turner interviewed everyone from the late Robin Williams to Scarlett Johansson.

Lipton is survived by his wife, Kedakai, whom he married in 1970. In 2007, Lipton received a lifetime achievement award at the Daytime Emmys. In 2016, he won a Critics' Choice Award for best reality host.
