There are now 80,344 confirmed cases in 39 countries, out of which 27,836 recovered, and 2,707 people have died. In addition, 27,657 are said to have recovered from the disease.

Moderna specializes in vaccines based on ribonucleic acid (RNA), which is a chemical messenger containing instructions for making proteins.

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and drugmaker Moderna have developed mRNA-1273 vaccince. Moderna has its manufacturing plant at Norwood.

The National Institutes of Health have been struggling to find a major drug company to help with developing and producing a vaccine for COVID-19, as it was named officially. The results from the trials are expected to be available over the next few weeks. The company said the first batch of vaccines was delivered to the U.S. government researchers on Monday. "If you want to really get it quickly, you're using technologies that are not as time-honored as the standard, what I call antiquated, way of doing it".

However, it's uncertain whether the drug will work, the newspaper notes.

"The collaboration across Moderna, with NIAID, and with CEPI has allowed us to deliver a clinical batch in 42 days from sequence identification", said Juan Andres, chief technical operations and quality officer at Moderna.

In the meantime, a number of other companies stepped in, like Johnson&Johnson, but they opted to develop their own corona virus vaccine. If this is successful, a second trial involving hundreds or thousands of participants might begin.

This trial could be conducted in the USA and China or in a region where the virus is spreading.

AZ will provide Clover with its pandemic adjuvant system for further evaluation of S-Trimer in preclinical studies, with the aim of rapidly scaling-up and producing large quantities of the potential coronavirus vaccine.
