Duke and Duchess of Sussex to ditch word 'royal' from branding

"Basically, if you look at what Harry and Meghan did as a kind of metaphor for the millennial, woke generation... they thought they could have it all at no cost to themselves".

This suggests that the Queen herself may have stepped in to ban the couple from continuing to use "Sussex Royal", yet another restriction placed on Harry and Meghan as they prepare to leave "the firm".

"The Duke and Duchess of Sussex do not intend to use "Sussex Royal" in any territory post spring 2020", the spokesperson said.

According to Daily Mail, the 38-year-old complained to her friends that using royal title even after quitting their position should not raise eyebrows.

Harry and Meghan first began using the Sussex Royal branding this time a year ago, after they split their household from that of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge - known as Kensington Royal.

The duke and duchess had also filed several trademark applications for the name, prompting rumours that they planned to "build an empire" using the brand name for new commercial work after leaving the monarchy.

The couple now use the Sussex Royal brand on their Instagram, which has 11.2 million followers, and official website.

CTV's royal commentator Richard Berthelsen said the trademark withdrawal is not surprising and is "like resigning before being fired".

Christina Michalos QC said: "The UK trade marks act prevents registration of royal emblems and words that wrongly give the impression of Royal Patronage or authorisation". They added, that they would "continue to honor our duty to the queen, the commonwealth, and our patronages". "That's how people are able to print up t-shirts and things like that with royal symbols on them".

Sources told Page Six that Harry and Meghan had hoped to leverage "Sussex Royal" into a global trademark for all of their endeavors, including books, products, documentaries and their charitable foundation. It's unclear how the Duke and Duchess will move forward with those entities and what their new foundation will be called.

The Ducke and Duchess of Sussex will drop their Sussex Royal branding.

It is believed Harry and Meghan will still use the term "Sussex" for their branding, meaning their foundation could be simply titled The Sussex Foundation.
