Google Brings 'Live Caption' Feature To The Pixel 2 & 2 XL

The Google Phone app is the pre-installed dialer application on Google Pixel smartphones, devices in the Android One program, and most recently, Xiaomi smartphones sold in Europe.

The discovery was made on Reddit when a user manually updated Google's Device Personalisation app, causing the Live Captions interface to appear (via Android Police), with a few users chiming in to confirm.

Unfortunately, APK teardowns can not officially verify if a feature is coming or not, and this situation is no different. Strings of code hidden in version 43.0.289191107 of the Google Phone app revealed that there will be an in-call button that will start a new recording. Previous to that, Google actually used to include an official API for call recording, but it's been several years, and unless you own an Android phone with its own custom dialer that has the capacity to record calls, the only way to do so was to root your phone. In fact, I've literally seen fellow media colleagues choose a phone based on whether it had a built-in call-recording feature. Furthermore, Google has also added a new icon and has brought a new layout. Developers were able to provide users with an alternative for a little while, but Google got rid of that capability with Android 9 Pie. By default, the app comes on all Google Pixel devices, Android One devices, and even Xiaomi devices. This coincidence means the new call recording feature could be exclusive to Xiaomi phones but well just have to wait and see Google's approach here. And since the strings of code don't mention Xiaomi by name, we can assume that the new feature won't be restricted to that manufacturer's phones only.

There is a Record button in the home UI of the Dialer app during any incoming or outgoing call. Unfortunately, it is now not a feature available in the Google Phone app.

There is little else we know about this feature. Enter your email to be subscribed to our newsletter.
