With there being so many strains of the flu virus to consider, Moore says it's important to practice prevention methods seriously.

Though we're seeing more new flu cases this week than we have in over two decades, there are a few simple tips to prevent you from becoming ill.

Based on what authorities know about how the virus spreads between people, it is still recommending that Americans avoid contact with possibly infected people and public surfaces.

"We always get flu shots every year hoping they get it right and it can protect us very well", said Everitt.

The new testing will begin immediately at five facilities that routinely participate in the agency's influenza surveillance program and test blood and fluid samples collected from suspected flu cases in their local areas.

Preliminary data for the current flu season shows there have been 919 reported cases of Influenza A and 591 cases of Influenza B on Staten Island, for a total of 1,510. Messonnier said if more people are going to the doctor that is a good thing.

"People being a little anxious and seeking care doesn't especially worry me, because that's the point".
