In total more than 68,000 people have been infected in China, with the death toll at 1,665.

The total of confirmed infections across mainland China was now 66,492, the National Health Commission said after 2,641 new cases were confirmed in the 24 hours to midnight on Friday.

The number of deaths in Hubei rose by 139 as of Friday, with 107 of those in Wuhan. At the moment, 217 medical teams with 25,633 doctors have been sent to the province of Hubei to provide medical assistance.

Jiao Yahui, also a senior official at the National Health Commission, said that the combination of traditional and western medicines have shown supportive results.

"The effect of the coronavirus controls is appearing", Mi told reporters.

China's fall in new cases follows a spike of more than 15,000 on Thursday, when the central province of Hubei adopted a new diagnostic method that includes clinical diagnoses in its official account. It said they were treating 5,606 patients with mild symptoms.

Three deaths from the virus have so far been recorded outside mainland China - in the Philippines, Hong Kong and Japan.

The virus, now called COVID-19, has infected more than 67,000 people globally and killed at least 1,527, the vast majority in China. No one from the ship has died of the virus.

"This is a rapidly evolving situation", the embassy said in a notice.

Anyone returning to Beijing must to go into quarantine for 14 days or risk punishment. Canada, Hong Kong and Italy said they were planning similar flights. The Westerdam was turned away from four ports around Asia before Cambodia allowed it to dock in Sihanoukville late last week.

The ship was believed to be free of the virus but an 83-year-old American woman from it tested positive upon arriving in Malaysia, authorities there said, adding that a second test, at the request of the cruise operator, confirmed the finding.

In the French case, an 80-year-old Chinese man died at a Paris hospital of a lung infection due to the flu-like virus, authorities said on Saturday. Europe has 46 cases of the virus.

"There still hasn't been sustained person-to-person transmission in Europe", he said.

After an extended Lunar New Year holiday, China urgently needs to get back to work.

Outside of China there have been more than 500 cases in almost 30 countries.

Many factories are yet to re-open, disrupting supply chains in China and beyond for everyone from smartphone makers to auto manufacturers.

A WHO-led joint mission with China will start its outbreak investigation work this weekend, focusing on how the new coronavirus is spreading and its severity, World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said.

Tedros told a gathering of global foreign and security policy leaders in Germany on Saturday that WHO is encouraged there has not yet been widespread transmission outside China and that "the steps China has taken to contain the outbreak at its source appear to have bought the world time".

Business losses are so severe that forecasters have cut their outlooks for China's economic growth.

Meanwhile the White House economics advisor, Larry Kudlow, said he expected the virus to "maybe" knock 0.2-0.3% off the US GDP in the first quarter.
