The talk show host has been taking heat after she did a segment on Galentine's Day that turned controversial when she went off on gay men planning to celebrate the unofficial holiday. because she felt it's a women-only occasion.

Williams, an Asbury Park native who grew up in Ocean Township, said she often watches in order to critique the show. "I deeply apologize", she went on to say while crying. "You're not a part".

Wendy said, "I don't care if you're gay".

"And stop wearing our skirts and our heels", she continued, referencing the trend of gender fluid fashion, made popular by stars like Billy Porter.

Her comments were met with a round of applause from the audience - but a slew of negative remarks online from viewers watching at home.

In a video message posted to her social media, Williams said, "I'll start by saying, I apologize. I'm very persnickety about how I do my show, and one thing I can tell you is that I never do my show in a place of malice". "Except for perhaps yesterday by saying what I said".

What do you think about what Wendy said and the fact that she apologized?

Williams released a tearful YouTube video explaining that she hadn't realised what offence she had caused until she got home and rewatched the show.

"You don't get a mensie every 28 days". I appreciate you supporting me. "Just saying, girls, what do we have for ourselves?" "No matter how gay".

Whatever, sis. If we want to talk about appropriation, Williams has been stealing from the gay community for years, just as gay men have been stealing from women, particularly black women, for decades.

A rep for Williams did not respond to PEOPLE's request for comment at the time. When a few men in the audience clapped in acknowledgment, she spoke her views about how the day should be dedicated to women only-and it quickly went off the rails.

The Wendy Williams Show airs weekdays in syndication (check local listings).
