When I think of Anthony Mantha, I can't help but recall the rich injury history he's provided us with over the last few seasons. "I was thankful. We were all scared when it first happened and first saw that it had gone near his eye".

The Sabres were not down long as Conor Sheary tied the score just 36 seconds later when he beat Jonathan Bernier (22 saves) for his eighth goal of the season. Ultimately, the Wings won't rely on the likes of Darren Helm or Justin Abdelkader, both fourth line talents to skate alongside Dylan Larkin and Tyler Bertuzzi on Detroit's top line.

Buffalo also rebounded to beat the Red Wings five days following a 4-3 shootout loss. Anthony Mantha picked up two assists in his first game back since late December. Now they head to Buffalo to take on the No. 25 Buffalo Sabres, who they've struggled against in three of their last four matchups.

Despite appearing in just 29 games this season, Mantha ranks fifth on the Detroit Red Wings with 24 points.

Sheary had a chance to give Buffalo the lead early in the second period, when he was awarded a penalty shot after taking a Filip Hronek slash at 1:32. Louis Domingue took the loss, falling to 3-6-2 on the year after allowing 5 goals on 33 shots faced in the losing effort. He was set up by Rasmus Dahlin, who drove up the right wing, cut to the middle and made a nifty, no-look drop pass to Johansson.

The Detroit Red Wings and the New Jersey Devils meet in National Hockey League action from the Prudential Center on Thursday night.

Perlini was hurt with 3:51 left in the first period. Red Wings C Frans Nielsen (upper body) was also activated from IR after missing five games.

Detroit re-assigned forwards Taro Hirose and Givani Smith to the Grand Rapids Griffins.
