"It is fantastic that Glenn is back in both ranks, which means his brilliant mid-range form for the (Melbourne) stars along with his results with the ball". Sean Abbott has also been included in the T20I lineup to bolster the pace bowling attack.

Meanwhile, Maxwell last played for Australia in October before taking an indefinite break from cricket, citing mental health issues.

Maxwell and Mitchell Marsh have both won recall to Australia's ODI and T20I squads, but Stoinis, on the day he was named the BBL 09's player of the tournament, has been overlooked for both. Since Australia's top order includes Aaron Finch, Steve Smith, David Warner and Wade, there was no place for Stoinis. Maxwell, who is now leading the Melbourne Stars in the ongoing Big Bash League (BBL), has shown a rich vein of form.

"The same can be said for Mitch".

Richardson returned from injury at the start of the BBL and has taken 15 wickets across the tournament for the Perth Scorchers. "His performances warranted inclusion in the area he operates as a powerful middle order batsman and handy bowler", Hohns explained.

Wade, who has been a part of Australia's Test squads as a specialist batsman rather than a wicketkeeping option, has also been rewarded for recent showings in the BBL.

"I knew if I could get things right that I had a game that's good enough to play at any level and when you've got so much going on behind the scenes and in the back of your mind or whatever it might be, to finally clear that away and just concentrate on the things that matter is a sign that it was the right move".

The T20 squad sees Ben McDermott and Billy Stanlake omitted from the side that beat Sri Lanka and Pakistan at the start of the 2019-20 home season while Peter Handscomb has been dropped from the ODI side that went to India.

Hayden - who will feature in Saturday's star-studded BBL final curtain raising bushfire relief match in Sydney - still believed Stoinis had a future in Australia's limited overs side. He is a very strong field player; and having a great person on every team.

ODI : Aaron Finch (captain), Alex Carrie, Pat Cummins, Ashton Egger, Josh Hazlewood, Marnus Labushane, Mitchell Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Kane Richardson, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Matthew Wade, David Warner, Adam Jampa. "He can also substitute as wicketkeeper if required", added Hohns.

Australia will take on South Africa in three T20Is and as many ODIs.

The teams will play three T20Is followed by a three-match ODI series.
