A year ago came a surprise announcement - not only that the Saw franchise was being revived (once again), but that a new vision for the horror series was being driven by Chris Rock.

You can pick up your copy of the original Saw here.

But THEN, when it was announced that it would star iconic comedian Chris Rock and would be based on a story that he himself wrote, confusion turned to intrigue as the marriage of Saw and Rock represented, well, something different, which is truly a rarity in Hollywood these days.

In addition to Chris Rock and Samuel L. Jackson, Spiral - which hits theaters on Friday, May 15 - stars Max Minghella and Marisol Nichols. The film is directed by Darren Lynn Bousman, the filmmaker begins Saw II, III, and _IV_.

Here's the official synopsis: "A sadistic mastermind unleashes a twisted form of justice in Spiral, the terrifying new chapter from the book of Saw". Rock plays a police detective investigating a series of grizzly crimes, with Jackson playing his father.

That thought is invoked with the utmost respect, as rather than just aping the style of the classic serial killer tale, Spiral: From The Book of Saw looks like it's embodied the concept rather effectively. While the trailer looks incredibly dark, Chris Rock has promised that there will be a 'sprinkling of humor' in Spiral.

While it's a short and sweet teaser, this introduction to Spiral: From The Book of Saw is giving off a lot of specific vibes in how it sets up its plot.
