Mercedes F1 team signs innovation-focused deal with AMD

The Mercedes Formula 1 team has added computer technology specialists AMD to its sponsorship portfolio ahead of the 2020 season.

The Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team will run its 2020 F1 vehicle, including AMD branding, for the first time on Friday, February 14, 2020. Ferrari even helped save AMD from financial collapse once upon a time... "We are thrilled to join forces with the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team, a team operating at the cutting edge of technology and with whom we are a shared spirit in delivering incredible innovation and performance from the factory to the racetrack". Okay, the AMD-Mercedes partnership probably runs a little deeper than that, but it does feel a little like AMD telling the world that it's not content with second place anymore.

But the most important take-away from the announcement is perhaps the "multi-year" term of the deal, a duration that would contradict a Mercedes pull-out from F1 at the end of 2020.

It is interesting to note then that, in the press release, sent out on Monday evening, that the only details revealed about the multi-year partnership concern 2020 - the deal meaning that company logos will be visible on team branding, race suits and on either side of the driver cockpits.

"We always try and push the technological boundaries in our hunt for performance", said Toto Wolff, Team Principal and CEO of the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team, in a statement. Through this partnership it will offer the team, which represents Mercedes' high-end performance AMG line, with AMD hardware.

Ferrari no longer lists AMD as a partner on its website.
