The World Health Organization said it expects the number of cases to grow as test results are returned on thousands of pending cases.

The patient, a Hong Kong resident with underlying illness, was confirmed on January 31 as Hong Kong's 13th case of novel coronavirus infection, and was admitted to the Princess Margaret Hospital for isolation and treatment.

It marked the second instance of person-to-person spread of the virus in the United States after such a case was announced last week in IL. In total, around 150 people have been infected with the new virus outside China.

A 39-year-old man has died after contracting the new coronavirus - the first confirmed fatality in Hong Kong since the start of the outbreak.

The toll in China rose to 425 as of the end of Monday, up by a record 64 from the previous day, the National Health Commission said on Tuesday.

Around 9,000 members out of the alliance's roughly 18,000 members are expected to join the strike on Tuesday, HAEA chairwoman Winnie Yu said.

The first death outside of China was reported on Sunday - a 44-year-old Chinese man who died in the Philippines after traveling there from Wuhan, the epicenter of the virus.

In Wuhan, patients were being transferred to a new 1,000-bed hospital that officials hope will improve isolation to stem the virus's spread. Footage shown by state broadcaster CCTV showed prefabricated wards equipped with state-of-the-art medical equipment and ventilation systems.

China sent medical workers and equipment Monday to its just-completed, 1,000-bed hospital for treating victims of the virus that has caused more than 17,300 infections at home and overseas.

"There are too many patients, it's overcrowded", Fang told The Associated Press.

"There aren't enough beds at all these hospitals", Fang said.

While Messonnier did not provide additional details, a Sunday news release from the San Benito County Health and Human Services Agency said the husband, 57, had recently traveled to Wuhan, the epicenter of the outbreak. Most victims were over 60 years and many had pre-existing medical problems.

Chinese official do not know exactly how the virus could have been transmitted from animals to people, but believe open-air markets in China, where wild and domesticated animals are sold, may be a contributor. In a study published in the journal Nature, Shi Zhen-Li and colleagues at the Wuhan Institute of Virology reported that genome sequences from seven patients were 96% identical to a bat coronavirus.

The two cases occurred in a husband and wife in California, said Nancy Messonnier, the director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, which is a part of the CDC, during a Monday telebriefing.

It is South Korea's 16th case.

Stock markets worldwide have sunk as major corporate names froze or scaled back their Chinese operations, threatening global supply chains that depend heavily on the country.

More than 171,000 people are under medical observation, while the number of people discharged reached 632.
