A Newsweek analysis of flightradar24, which tracks flights through Global Positioning System, found that the crash of an Sikorsky S-76 helicopter occurred roughly at 9:45 a.m. local time near Calabasas, California on Sunday morning after taking off at 9:06 a.m. from John Wayne Airport, in Orange County, California. The death toll at the scene is up to nine, The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said in a press conference Sunday afternoon.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Allen Kenitzer told KTLA that the helicopter was a Sikorsky S-76.

The sports world lost an icon when Bryant and eight others, including his 13-year-old daughter Gianna, were killed in a helicopter crash in Calabasas, Calif., on Sunday, Jan. 26.

"The NBA family is devastated by the tragic passing of Kobe Bryant and his daughter, Gianna", said NBA commissioner Adam Silver. Why was she the only one of Bryant's daughters traveling with him?

Bryant and Gianna had been flying to a game his daughter was expected to play in when their helicopter crashed, according to United States reports.

A memorial to Bryant has already been set up outside Staples Center, home of the LA Lakers, where Kobe played for years.

Bryant entered the National Basketball Association straight out of high school in the 1996 draft, becoming the first guard ever drafted directly out school.

Newsweek reached out to Bryant's publicist for comment but did not receive a response in time for publication.

"I'm stunned. Words can't even come close to describing it".

"Words can not express his impact on Players, the NBA and the game of basketball". Instead, during the first two possessions, the teams let the two 24-second shot clocks run out (for Kobe's number 24) as the fans chanted "Kobe!" for several solid minutes.

Los Angeles Clippers coach Doc Rivers fought back tears ahead of his team's game against the Orlando Magic.

"Right now everybody is a Lakers fan".

"Continuing to move the game forward (at) KingJames", Bryant wrote in his final Twitter post about the moment. "Much respect my brother".
