The date of the Chinese New Year, also known as the Lunar New Year, changes because, unlike the traditional celebration of the Western New Year that sees us celebrate on December 31, the Chinese New Year is based on the lunar calendar instead of the Gregorian.

Over 11,000 people flocked to the two-day festival from across the country past year, with celebrations being the busiest event at the Riverside Lights Festival in Perth.

Attending the event, Chinese Consul General in Houston Cai Wei sent New Year greetings to all participants and offered children red envelopes - a monetary gift given during holidays or special occasions. He then planned to hit up the Lunar New Year festival at Metropolis at Metrotown.

"It is also a time to celebrate the coming year with festive activities and celebrations". The numbers tell the story.

"We have excellent relationships with the Perth and Kinross Council and PKAVS, as well as with the Federation of Chinese Associations in Scotland, whose support, advice and help are invaluable".

Founded in 1956, Asia Society is a nonpartisan, nonprofit institution with major centers and public buildings in New York, Hong Kong, and Houston, and offices in other nine cities worldwide.

The Rat is the first zodiac sign in the cycle, followed by Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig. "In this New Year of the Rat, let's keep up our efforts for the mission of our friendship, and bring new tangible benefits to our two peoples and beyond", Huang added. This year's animal on the Chinese zodiac, the rat, symbolizes fortune and fertility, and people born in the Year of Rat are thought to be optimistic and energetic.
