One of the smaller Kentucky basketball rosters in recent years got even thinner on Friday.

Kentucky freshman guard Kahlil Whitney has decided its in his best interest to leave the University of Kentucky and seek a new place to continue his college career.

Whitney said playing at United Kingdom was a dream of his, but his time in the blue and white has not gone as he'd hoped. "Unfortunately, my time at Kentucky has not gone as I had hoped, and I therefore need to make a hard decision quickly to put myself back in to the best position possible as I continue to develop and work towards my ultimate goal".

Whitney started the first seven games of the season, but his role has steadily diminished. He struggled offensively and only hit double-digits once through those games - 11 points in a win over Eastern Kentucky.

The school said in a release that Whitney can transfer to another school without restrictions per NCAA rules if he decides to do so.

"First and foremost, Kahlil is a great kid", United Kingdom head coach John Calipari said in a statement released by the school. "I've learned a lot from him in my short time at United Kingdom and will take much of his wisdom with me as I continue my journey".

Kentucky (14-4) visits No. 18 Texas Tech on Saturday in the Big 12-SEC Challenge.
