But whether the character appears again in the series or not, he will not be played by the Australian actor.

Actually, there will be no Agent Smith at all (probably; recasting in The Matrix is not unprecedented) since Hugo Weaving is not reprising his iconic role.

It seems that, although the villain seemed dead and buried at the end of "Revolutions", Lana Wachowski meant to bring him back somehow, relying on the Australian interpreter for it.

In the same interview, Weaving also revealed why he didn't return as the Red Skull in the Avengers franchise. "They're pushing on forward with out me".

"It's unlucky however in truth I had this be offering [for "The Visit"] after which the be offering got here from "The Matrix, ' so I knew it was once taking place however I didn't have dates", Weaving mentioned". I thought (I) could have done both, and it took eight weeks to understand that the dates would work - I did not agree (the role in The Visit at that time). So, we sorted the dates, and then she kind of changed her mind. The character reappeared in "Avengers: Infinity War" and "Endgame" but played by another actor. The same could be said for Agent Smith, the original trilogy's villain, famously played by Hugo Weaving.

"By that time, they had postponed the contracts we had agreed to and therefore the money they offered me for" The Avengers "was much less than what I had gotten for the very first one, and c was for two films. And the promise when we first signed the contracts was that the money would grow each time". So, in addition to Keanu, Carrie-Anne Moss and Jada Pinkett Smith coming back, they were, somehow, going to bring Hugo Weaving and Agent Smith back, too. (According to Weaving, they said that it was "just voice acting" and "doesn't really matter.") Weaving says that he "really wanted to do so much", and therefore he didn't.

"In negotiations to return to the franchise, but it's possible that my schedule might conflict with the production and I'll have to be excluded".

It should be released in theaters on May 21, 2021.
