Now, Bose is also following the same route as the company has issued a statement that it is closing down all of its retail stores in the US, Australia, Japan, and Europe.

Bose products are currently available in Ireland via numerous retailers and audio specialists, though Dundrum Shopping Centre in Dublin houses a dedicated Bose store which is now expected to close. It told the Verge via email: "In other parts of the world, Bose stores will remain open, including approximately 130 stores located in Greater China and the United Arab Emirates; and additional stores in India, Southeast Asia, and South Korea".

At the time Colette classified the move as a "radical idea", with the global sales president applying the same description to the company's eCommerce shift.

As sad as it is to say, electronics retailers the world over are having a hard time competing with online retailers like Amazon who can offer better prices and faster shipping for folks who don't need or want personal interaction when buying tech. The company with its stores aimed to deliver a way for customers to experience its products without purchasing first, but the booming growth of e-commerce has since made it outdated.

And this week, it also emerged Curious Planet - the educational retailer previously known as Australian Geographic, which is owned by parent company Co-op Bookshop - would pull 63 stores across Australia after failing to find a buyer for the brand, while denim chain Jeanswest entered voluntary administration just yesterday.

Bose will shutter 119 retail stores across the globe, including its entire United States fleet.

The shock news was revealed yesterday afternoon, with the high-end headphone and speaker retailer announcing 119 brick-and-mortar stores are set to close globally.

The stores are used to showcase their line up, which has grown beyond Bose's signature noise-cancelling headphones in recent years to include smart speakers and sunglasses that double up as earbuds. It's still hard, because the decision impacts some of our fantastic store teams who make us proud every day.

"As smartphones changed the industry, the company's focus turned to mobile, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi solutions", Bose said.

Bose will be offering outplacement assistance and severance to affected employees.

But Ms Burke said the number of affected workers would remain "private" for now. "And everyone at Bose is grateful".
