The new film is a follow-up to the pair's 2009 Oscar nominated documentary The Last Truck, capturing the shuttering of the Moraine GM Assembly Plant.

The film was nominated for an Oscar earlier this week in the Best Documentary category.

American Factory is the former first couple's first produced film.

American Factory, from directors Julia Reichert and Steven Bognar, goes inside an abandoned General Motors plant that was transformed into an auto-glass factory by a Chinese billionaire, bringing a mix of hope and culture clashes to a blue-color OH town.

Former President Barack Obama and his wife, former first lady Michelle Obama, have added an Oscar nomination to their very long lists of life achievements. "We're so proud of them and amazed by their talent for storytelling".

Former President Barack Obama added his congratulations as well.

American Factory will compete against The Cave, a documentary about genocide in Syria; The Edge of Democracy about the unraveling of two Brazilian presidencies, and others. "This is exactly what Michelle and I hope to achieve through Higher Ground". "Congrats to the incredible filmmakers and entire team!" It is still an achievement for the Obamas, as the documentary is the first release from their Higher Ground production company - which hit a home run in its first at-bat. "We think there's something here for everyone - moms and dads, curious kids, and anyone simply looking for an engaging, uplifting watch at the end of a busy day". It offers a window into people as they actually are and it's the kind of story we don't see often enough.

The Academy Awards will be handed out on February 9.
