Fresh snowfall in Kashmir threw life out of gear on Monday and forced cancellation of all inbound and outgoing flights from Srinagar airport and led to the suspension of traffic on the lone motorable road connecting Kashmir with rest of India.

It should be noted that movement of vehicles with essential supplies on Jammu-Srinagar road is being prioritised and that more supplies are expected to be received in Kashmir tomorrow. Sadna Top and Z-gali received about two to three feet of snow since Saturday night.

Additionally, following the fresh spell of snowfall in various areas, traffic on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, including Jawahar Tunnel and in the Ramban Sector remained suspended. The snowfall began early on Sunday as was predicted by the Meteorological Department.

The night temperature at Qazigund, gateway to the valley, Kupwara in north Kashmir and tourist resort of Kokernag improved and settled at minus 1 degree, minus 2.3 degree and minus 2.2 degree, respectively. The Pahalgam resort in south Kashmir was the coldest recorded place in the Valley at minus 9.5 degrees Celsius, followed by the Gulmarg skiing resort in north Kashmir at minus 7.6 degrees Celsius.

According to a MET official, while the plains received light to moderate snowfall, the higher reaches of the valley and Jammu and Ladakh regions experienced heavy snowfall.

Entire Kargil district and some parts in Leh district in Ladakh region are also receiving heavy snow fall since last night. Vehicles remained off the roads due to slippery conditions.

A Met department spokesperson told UNI that heavy snowfall would occur at isolated places while light to moderate snowfall would occur at most places in the valley during the next 24 hours.

Meanwhile today minimum temperatures increased by a few notches Celsius with Lahaul and Spiti district's administrative centre Keylong recording the lowest temperature at minus 6 degrees Celsius.
