Williams hadn't won a title since the Australian Open singles in January 2017 and not since she became a mother to daughter Olympia, who was court-side to see the victory.

Victory for the 23-time Grand Slam champion will no doubt have boosted her morale ahead of the year's opening major, especially after United States president Donald Trump tweeted "Congratulations to Serena Williams on another big win". She is a great player and an even greater person. The last three years have been a challenge for Williams as she fought to balance the demands of her tennis career and motherhood. Since returning to the sport after giving birth, she's made five tournament finals and lost every single one. Playing her Slams as strategically as possible, Serena has consistently had good finishes in the tournaments that she has chosen to play.

Other ranking climbers were Elena Rybakina (No. 30), Jennifer Brady (No. 49) and Pegula (No. 64). Williams won his first WTA title in February 1999 by defeating Amélie Mauresmo of France.

Whether her choices garnered targeted and unnecessary controversy, from catsuits to tutus to her throwback beads, Ms. Williams has also established herself as a bonified fashion icon.

Pegula took the lead 2-0 before Williams rebounded and scored 3-3 in the first set.

"It feels that I was definitely improving as the week went on", Williams said.

Williams's next target is joining Margaret Court on a record 24 Grand Slams, and as much as she says it is the love of the game that keeps her going at the age of 38, surpassing the Australian is still something that drives her.

Now Williams is preparing for the Australian Open, which she won seven times, most recently when she was pregnant.

The pair progressed easily to the final but were overwhelmed on Sunday by Townsend and Muhammad who were a more practiced and efficient combination.

The tournament top seed slipped 1-3 behind in the first set against the unseeded Pegula, a fellow American.
