"Try to hang on".

The unassuming 21-year-old was allegedly the leader of an infamous Mexican cartel and in videos taken just after the gun fight, she can be seen struggling for breath after receiving a bullet wound to the neck.

It is understood she died in hospital an hour after her arrest.

The last moments of La Catrina, captured on the body camera of an officer.

She led a team of hitmen within the New Generation Cartel that killed more than a dozen state cops during an October 14 ambush in Michoacan state's Aguililla municipality, the outlet reported.

The incident occurred when she was meeting another cartel boss Miguel "M2" Fernández, a top leader in the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, who escaped unharmed in the incident.

Later a soldier could be seen holding the female assassin La Catrina her in the arms and shifting to the helicopter, which was summoned after the gang members blocked nearby roads to halt security forces movement.

The CJNG took off between 2013 and 2015 and is said to be to be the most unsafe and largest Mexican cartel under their leader, Ruben Oseguera Cervantes, aka "El Mencho" - it operates in the Americas, Asia and Europe. The cartel is said to operate in 75 per cent of Mexican states, and to have operations in Europe, Asia and Australia as well as across the Americas. The shootout, involving state troops, state police and the National Guard, happened in a village called La Bocanada in Tepalcatepec, Michoacán, according to Mexico News Daily. Some say La Catrina was found at a cartel safe house raided by Mexican troops; others say authorities came under fire when they took apart a roadblock at the town's entrance.

The hitwoman - who shared her nickname with the female skeletal figure associated with Mexico's Day of the Dead - was regarded as one of the leading figures in the cartel, according to The Sun.

It is believed that La Catrina joined the CJNG in 2017 after becoming involved with another of the cartel's leaders known as "M2".

She led a team of hitmen within the CJNG cell that carried out an ambush on state police last Octoberin the municipality of Aguililla in Michoacan State. The raid happened in a violent region home to other cartels such as the Knights Templar, the Viagras, and the Chocomiles de Tepeque.
