There were five new flu-related fatalities in the past week in Nevada, increasing the total to 11, health officials said.

CNN recently reported the concerns of Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, who notes that this year's rate of illness nationwide is outpacing the deadly 2017-2018 flu season. The influenza viruses circulate worldwide and can affect anybody in any age group; however, children, people with chronic illness, pregnant women, and the elderly are at high risk for complications from the flu.

The death marks the 15th in the state this season, but the first child.

State health officials said the child was under 10 years old, became very sick quickly and passed away on the ride to the hospital. Children have been especially hit hard by the b-strain of the virus.

"Levels of outpatient [influenza-like illness] remain elevated; however, hospitalization rates and percent of deaths due to pneumonia and influenza remain low", the CDC report reads. "We want to be sure that again we vaccinate not only for ourselves, but that we protect the other children around them", Haupt said.

She implores people to get their flu shots, as it can either prevent the flu or mitigate symptoms.

"The single most important thing to remember regarding the flu vaccine is that you're not only getting it to protect yourself".
