The Avalanche scored once each period, and a dominant second period by the Flyers went for naught as they only saw a one-goal deficit increase to two.

The Philadelphia Flyers lose to the Colorado Avalanche by a score of 3-1.

He could have had a hat-trick, but chose to score a few goals after Hart parried a diving glove in the middle of the second half.

"I got pretty good wood on it, I just put it at the ideal height for him to make the save", Rantanen said.

Colorado Avalanche defenseman Ryan Graves (27) and center Tyson Jost (17) reach for the puck away from Philadelphia Flyers right wing Jakub Voracek (93) in the second period at the Pepsi Center. "It was a great save". Claude Giroux (10th) cut the gap to 3-1 with 5:12 remaining in the game, but Colorado closed out the game. In front of the net, Matt Niskanen got caught in between two Avalanche wingers; Landeskog and Rantanen. Pavel Francouz flirted with a shutout for almost 55 minutes and stopped 31 of 33 shots to earn second-star honors.

It was Giroux's 10th of the season.

"I would like a shutout, but if you told me in the morning that we would win 3-1, I would accept it", Francouz said.

TOP PERFORMERS: MacKinnon leads the Avalanche with 29 assists and has collected 48 points this season.

Hart had 25 saves for Philadelphia. But the Kevin Hayes' line had a tough night - they were out for all 3 against - and the Flyers bottom six didn't get much going chance-wise except for a shift here and there where there were momentary opportunities off Colorado turnovers. Konecny has 11 goals and 17 assists, both team highs.

The Flyers had several good chances, but Francouz kept them off the board, and the Avalanche grabbed a two-goal advantage on a counterattack. MacKinnon brought it to the left circle and sent the puck over to Rantanen as he came down the right side.

Rantanen got his second of the game and eighth of the season 2:31 into the third when he scored on a pass from Nazem Kadri from behind the net to put Colorado ahead 3-0.

"Naz made a quick play, gave it to me and the goalie had no chance", Rantanen said.

The Avalanche took a 1-0 lead at 5:21 of the first period on a goal by Matt Calvert.

"I heard it hit the post and I tried to turn around to find it, and in the end it splashed into the back of her husband", Hart said. "Just kind of a weird, broken piece".

The Flyers were without their leading scorer, forward Travis Konecny, who suffered a concussion in the win over Ottawa on Saturday.

Colorado goaltender Philipp Grubauer was expected to return after missing one game but was scratched, and Adam Werner was called up from the AHL affiliate to serve as the backup to Francouz. Avalanche D Cale Makar missed his second straight game with an upper-body injury.
