The gates and concourse were evacuated as a security breach is unfolding.

The chaotic scenes were captured, showing hundreds of confused customers piling out of the terminal.

The malfunction occurred around 2pm and resulted in a "small number" of people to enter the quarantined area beyond the security area without being properly screened.

An airport spokesperson said that passengers were moved to the check-in area.

The entire area was evacuated while security conducted checks, before all passengers were rescreened.

In a statement, Adelaide Airport authorities said the terminal had been evacuated due to a "security fault" but services would resume after re-screening of passengers.

"Some flight delays may be expected, passengers should check with airlines for flight status", it tweeted.

'The place is just packed. They'll have to delay leaving'.

'They're rushing us all through the x-rays at the moment so that's a positive sign, ' one said.

Only one flight, a Cobham airlines trip to Prominent Hill, is now listed as delayed.
