George Atkinson III, who is former Oakland Raiders running back died at the age of 27 years.

According to the information received from the various sources, the Athletic's Pete Sampson tweeted the news of his death late Monday night but in his tweet, no cause of death was reported.

George Atkinson starred for the Irish on kickoff returns as a freshman in 2011 before playing a key role in the backfield in 2012 and 2013.

Atkinson's death comes about a year after his brother Josh's death.

The son of former Oakland Raiders safety George Atkinson, Atkinson III finished his Notre Dame career with 843 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns.

Josh had felt guilty for taking their mother off life support and later died from complications from Crohn's disease in October 2018.

His family and his friends are mourning his death whereas no one has informed us about the exact cause of death.

George was open about his struggle to grieve his twin brother, opening up in a letter as recently as October, and recalling the death of their mother, who suffered from paranoid schizophrenia. He was also institutionalized for self-harm. That is the moment I cannot describe.

"Without my daughter, I do not know where I would be right now".

After jumping to the National Football League with a year of eligibility remaining, Atkinson played five games for the Raiders in 2014 and bounced around practice squads before taking seven carries for 34 yards and a touchdown for the Cleveland Browns in 2016.

"In the past year, the Atkinson family have lost both Josh and George Atkinson", Notre Dame Recruiting tweeted.
