"Honestly, I never thought that I would even qualify for the Ballon D'Or, until the moment that I was nominated".

Van Dijk said: "It was awesome".

"Where I am right now is something I'm very proud of". It will be hard. Both have been miles ahead of the competition this year, and intrinsically influential to their respective sides, hence why Messi and Van Dijk were the runaway top two.

USA's Megan Rapinoe has been crowned the 2019 Women's Ballon d'Or victor ahead of England's Lucy Bronze and her compatriot Alex Morgan. "It's been an incredible year", Rapinoe said in a recorded message.

But once again it was Messi's name on the prize as he added to the Ballons d'Or he won in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2015.

Virgil van Dijk missed out on winning the 2019 Ballon d'Or after Lionel Messi picked up his sixth trophy.

It came a year after Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric ended the 10-year dominance of Messi and Ronaldo, but it was that decision that upset Chiellini.

"Ten years ago I received my first Ballon d'Or, guided by my three brothers", Messi told the audience in the Theatre du Chatelet on Monday. It was something unthinkable at the time.

He scored 21 league goals in 2018-19 to help the Bianconeri to an eighth successive Scudetto and has six goals in 11 starts this term, despite injury issues curtailing his playing time over the past month.

The Barcelona number 10 took the prize - organised by France Football magazine and voted for by a panel of journalists from around the world - from Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk, with Ronaldo third. "There are no losers on that evening", Van Dijk said.

Meanwhile, after the Brighton win, van Dijk was asked by Gary Lineker whether he was hoping to beat Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo to win the award this time.

That led to Rapinoe being named The Best FIFA Women's Player in September and she has now succeeded Ada Hegerberg by winning the second ever Ballon d'Or Feminin.

"There are a couple of players like [Messi] who are fantastic".

The Ballon d'Or is one of the most coveted trophies in a professional footballer's life, and the 2019 edition of the award will be announced by France Football on Monday, December 2, 2019. Lucy Bronze of England was second, and Alex Morgan third.
