While this could be a case of a 6-14 team protecting its best asset, fans across the National Basketball Association are starting to grow impatient in the midst of what is quickly turning into a lost season in New Orleans.

Dallas Mavericks MVP candidate Luka Doncic tied his career-high of 42 points against the Phoenix Suns on Friday while leading his team to a 120-113 victory. The 20-year-old is averaging 30.6 points, 9.9 rebounds, and 9.6 assists in just over 34 minutes per contest.

Doncic finished one rebound shy of yet another triple-double, adding 10 assists and nine rebounds to go with his 27 points on 10-of-23 from the field and 4-of-10 from beyond the arc. The only other two players to accomplish the same feat are Oscar Robertson (five times) and Russell Westbrook (twice), according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

"I missed a lot of threes - I have to fix that, but especially get in the paint, kick-outs, layups that is what I have to realize, and take fewer threes", said Doncic. If anything, the result - stemming from a disastrous 55-38 second half that snapped L.A.'s 10-game winning streak just as its schedule starts to get tougher - only left the Lakers strengthening their resolve. Exceptional person. Exceptionally tough. Afterwards remembered facing his idol for the first time, "Normally I am never nervous, but was for sure before that game". "They have many different threats, inside and out, so it's going to be a fun one and we look forward to scouting, looking at the film and figuring out what we need to do to obviously improve on ourselves, but also guard them and make them play to towards their weaknesses". "That's the key for us". LeBron almost had a triple-double himself, as he grabbed nine boards and dished out eight assists.

It didn't matter, though.

"It was very bad, terrible for me", Doncic said.

Luka Doncic dribbled up to LeBron James, stepped back and coolly drained a 3-pointer from well behind the line. There's a certain responsibility you have when you get on a roll like this. "If we play to our abilities, there's nobody we can't beat and nowhere we can't get a W".

"You don't know until you [strive for it]", James said of the goal to avoid a two-game losing streak all season, which he says the team has eyed since opening night. But the Mavericks are leaning on him just as much as ever.

"We're going to stay humble", Carlisle said. "Our team has taken its present form but it's still early in the season and there's a long way to go".
