Flu shots urged as illness envelops the nation

Past year a record 70% of doctors, nurses, midwives and other NHS staff who have direct contact with patients received the flu vaccine, with most local NHS employers achieving a vaccination rate of 75% or higher.

Although it is the holiday season, the CDC and other organizations want to remind the general public that it is never a bad time to get your flu vaccine.

Flu activity has been steadily rising over the past several weeks.

May said: "Each and every one of us who works or has worked on the front line - whether in hospitals, GP surgeries, ambulance trusts or in the community - knows that every winter flu has a serious impact on the health of thousands of people".

Reports on flu activity released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention list Alabama as one of the states dealing with high levels of the respiratory illness.

Dr. Pedro A. Piedra, professor of molecular virology and microbiology and of pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine, says now is the time to get vaccinated to ensure the best protection against flu virus throughout the season.

Public health experts stress that the Australian flu season doesn't always predict the USA one. Flu activity also typically peaks between December and February.

Doctors in Grayson County say they're seeing lots of patients with flu or flu-like symptoms. By the end of the 2017-2018 season, 145 people in Georgia died from flu-related causes, and more than 3,000 people in metro Atlanta were hospitalized for flu-related illnesses.

Each year, 5% to 20% of the US population gets the flu.

The percentage of outpatient visits to healthcare providers related to influenza-like illness increased to 6.8 percent for the most recent week, up from 1.5 percent.

This year is the first year a high dose vaccine was to be available to people over the age of 65.
