Gardner Minshew will start for Jaguars against Chargers

"Obviously it was a tough deal", Marrone said on an afternoon conference call. "Gardner's going to start for us versus the Chargers".

Minshew replaced Foles to start the second half of Sunday's loss to Tampa Bay. Foles has lost all four of his starts and he has thrown for 736 yards, three touchdowns, and two interceptions.

That makes it less pressing to know the identity of that quarterback and head coach Doug Marrone said after Sunday's loss to the Buccaneers that he'll take his time before revealing the answer to that question. Jacksonville's only touchdown came on a three-yard connection from Minshew to Dede Westbrook. During that span, the veteran completed 72 of 109 pass attempts for 661 yards, with two TDs, two INTs and two lost fumbles, as the Jags scored just 33 points over 10 quarters.

"I handled the situation this morning", Marrone said.

"It's brutal. It's tough", Marrone said. He worked his ass off to come back and he's a great pro. At the same time he's got to be ready in case there's an injury or whatever it may be. I haven't spoken to either quarterback afterward. "We're planning on him playing".

The Jaguars had signed Foles to a four-year, $88 million contract ($50 million guaranteed) during free agency, and Philadelphia Eagles get weepy when Foles is mentioned after leading the Eagles to their first-ever Super Bowl win in 2017 and to another playoff win in 2018. They finish out the regular season at Oakland, at Atlanta and home against Indianapolis.

Where the offense and team go from here will be determined by Minshew's play down the stretch. A post-June 1 trade would save the Jaguars $15.875 million and include a dead cap hit of $6.25 million.

But Foles' magic, apparently, didn't follow him to Jacksonville. Minshew threw a touchdown pass at the beginning of the fourth quarter to help cut the Bucs' lead to 25-11. Now he's got the job back, but that doesn't mean Foles is exclusively to blame for the offense's problems.

Marrone added he considers Foles "a really good quarterback". "I just think it's the right thing to do". It's a team game. "We've got to be able to run the ball better".
