Alonso is set to participate in the Dakar Rally in January 2020 and will then set his sights on winning the Indy 500 at the third attempt - he led for a spell on his debut at the Brickyard in 2017, but ultimately failed to finish following a Honda engine issue.

Speaking to Sky Sports he admits that he is open to a return but is waiting to see how the new regulations impact the sport in 2021.

And he drove for McLaren in their ill-fated return to Indy this year, failing to qualify after a week strewn with errors by the team. "Let's see how the next weeks unfold", said the two-time Formula 1 world champion.

"They are not the only options but for sure they are the strongest two", he added. "I have a very good relationship there".

Verstappen would like to see Alonso get placed into a competitive vehicle.

Insiders say the Spaniard is close to concluding a deal with Andretti, but asked how far down the line he was in his talks with the team, Alonso said: "50% of negotiations".

A world champion in 2005 and 2006, Alonso has not raced in the sport since the 2018 season but a comeback in 2021 is possible should he decide he is missing the thrill of F1 racing.

He may have been occupying his time recently with other motorsport pursuits - but one year on from his last F1 race at the 2018 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso has reiterated that a return to the sport in 2021 is still potentially on the cards for him. "I'll try and do a little bit better than this year!" But I think it only makes sense if he gets stuck in a competitive auto.

"F1 is still a possibility".

Red Bull driver Verstappen said he would "absolutely" welcome back Alonso, but he said "you should only come back in the right circumstances".

"Also the driver market is very open for 2021, so there is no hurry to make a decision".
