Ever since the first trailer dropped back in July, the internet has been howling like alley cats in heat about the weird, wacky, uncanny valley of human/cat hybrid that is this film.

The movie's star-studded cast, including Idris Elba, Jennifer Hudson, and Taylor Swift, has received a "digital fur" makeover, thanks to some CGI tech.

The second trailer gives viewers a closer look at Taylor Swift's cat as she performs on stage.

"Tonight is a magical night where I choose the cat that deserves a new life", Judi Dench's cat says at the beginning of the trailer.

The Late Late Show host James Corden, X Men's Ian McKellen, comic actress Rebel Wilson also star, while the film introduces England's Royal Ballet principal dancer Francesca Hayward who takes the starring role of white kitten Victoria in her feature film debut. The screenplay is by Lee Hall and Hooper, based on Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats by T.S. Eliot and the stage musical by Lloyd Webber.

The new clip also offers more drama and theatrics and shows the swishy-tailed cats preparing for the fateful event where "the most deserving cat will be reborn to another life so they could be who they always dreamed of being".

The world-class creative team bringing Cats to the screen includes Oscar-nominated production designer Eve Stewart (The King's Speech), cinematographer Christopher Ross (Terminal, Room), Oscar-nominated costume designer Paco Delgado (The Danish Girl), Oscar-winning sound mixer Simon Hayes (Les Misérables), BAFTA-winning executive music producer Marius De Vries (Moulin Rouge, Romeo + Juliet) and renowned casting director Lucy Bevan (Ready Player One, Murder on the Orient Express).

Cats hits theatres December 20.
