The start of the Mayakoba Golf Classic has been pushed back to Friday after heavy rain in Playa del Carmen.

The PGA Tour could be headed to its second Monday finish in less than a month after torrential rain prevented play in the scheduled first round at the Mayakoba Classic in Mexico on Thursday.

After initially delaying the start of play on Thursday, the PGA Tour later announced round one would begin on Friday.

El Camaleon Golf Club has received almost 9 inches of rain since Monday. The lead rules official at the tournament, Slugger White, says there has been so much rain that the course isn't draining. "We've got situations out there where we could lose balls in areas that we have no virtual certainty where it was".

"Tomorrow, unfortunately, is going to look nearly about the same until we get here and see what happens", he said. "Obviously, we hope to finish on Sunday, but Monday will always be there".

The event, which was won last year by Matt Kuchar, is the penultimate PGA Tour competition of the year.
