Fresh Off the Boat Canceled After Six Seasons

"Fresh Off the Boat" has reached its final port: The ABC comedy starring Randall Park and Constance Wu will end early next year after completing its sixth and final season. The show will wrap up with an hour-long series finale, set to air on Friday, Feb. 21, 2020.

ABC President Karey Burke said she "was happy" that Wu subsequently apologized.

As the show's ratings declined in recent years, ABC moved Fresh Off the Boat from its Tuesday night family block to a revived TGIF block on Fridays, but that hasn't improved its performance.

Loosely based on Eddie Huang's memoir of the same title, Fresh Off the Boat stars Randall Park and Wu as Taiwanese immigrants who move to Orlando in the '90s to open a restaurant and raise their three sons. Led by creator Nahnatchka Khan, who serves as showrunner, and executive producer Melvin Mar, it will finish its run with six seasons and 116 produced episodes.

ABC and 20th Century Fox Television, which produces the show, declined to comment. It debuted in 2015 following the success of ABC's other family sitcoms "Modern Family" and "black-ish" and was lauded for its diversity and unique perspective on the Asian American experience (though Huang later derided it for becoming "artificial"). It was truly a special experience and hopefully will forever be a reminder of all the stories out there that deserve to be told.

As of Friday morning, Wu didn't have a negative public reaction to the announcement like she did when news broke in the spring that the show had been renewed for a sixth season. In September, she told Variety this project was a play, also explaining "a lot of people had told me, 'Oh, yeah, it's not going to get picked up.'" Keep an eye out for news of the show's cancellation posted on Instagram today to be met with a prompt "like" from a newly unemployed Wu, now free to pursue theater to her heart's content. "So upset right now that I'm literally crying", she said. "We love what she does on the show and we love the show", she said at the time.

It's the end of the line for "Fresh Off the Boat". TV Series Finale reports that Fresh Off the Boat Season 6 is only averaging a 0.45 rating in the 18-49 age demographic in Live+Same day calculations, with an average audience of only 2.7 million. "The show is just too strong and we love it".
