Kovac was dismissed at the weekend following a poor run of form that culminated in a 5-1 thrashing at the hands of Eintracht Frankfurt, Bayern's worst Bundesliga defeat in a decade and one which left them fourth in the table.

'Secondly, I have known Beckenbauer, Rummenigge and Hoeness for 40 years.

Wenger, 70, was believed to be the front-runner and called club president Karl-Heinz Rummenigge to express his desire to take over at the Allianz. I am the only one involved in this story.

'We talked for four to five minutes maximum, and he told me they had assigned Flick to be the coach, he will manage the two next games, because they will play Dortmund tomorrow.

Bayern face Borussia Dortmund next and are unlikely to make a decision before Saturday's Bundesliga clash, but Sky in Germany understands there could be developments from Sunday onward. He was in his auto going to the game against Olympiacos.

When asked about other candidates on Tuesday, Bayern sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic said: "I won't talk about any names". I told him that I didn't have any thoughts about it.

He is keen to have more time to think about the offer as he ponders a return to club management for the first time since leaving Arsenal in May 2018.

Wenger told BeIN Sports on Wednesday that: "I'd never refuse to talk to Bayern Munich, because I know the people who have led the club for 30 years and I was almost going to Bayern a long, long time ago. This is the true story", said Wenger.

"I send my best wishes to Bayern, who are actually at a turning point right now, because Hoeneß - a key man for this club - is leaving". It seems the future of the club is uncertain.

'For myself, I wish good luck to Bayern and for me the situation is resolved'.
