Actress Debra Messing criticized "The View", describing the daytime show as "irresponsible" for hosting Donald Trump Jr., the president's son, on Thursday. Protestors also reportedly swarmed Trump Jr.'s auto as he both entered and left the studio. To which Trump replied: "I'm not questioning your character, you're questioning my father's character". The pair sparred with numerous talk show's co-hosts, including Behar and Whoopi Goldberg, while the audience responded with competing boos and cheers.

"Well, listen, I think it depends on the hat I'm wearing".

The couple had appeared for the show's landmark 5,000th episode to promote Trump Jr.'s new book, "Triggered: How the Left Thrives on Hate and Wants to Silence Us".

Sunny Hostin informed Trump Jr. that revealing the whistle blower's identity was a federal crime. One recurring spar between the panelists is the one between McCain and Joy Behar. She maintained a measured tone when she said the senior Trump had hurt a lot of people on his way up. She asked if the president might apologize. "So what's the difference between me tweeting about it", Trump, Jr. said. "But he took on the establishment, and that's the premier sin in American politics these days".

Was it worth it, though, she pressed, hurting all those people?

It happened a little more than halfway through the hectic episode when Meghan McCain and Behar tried to get their guests to address how President Trump had been "lowering the discourse".

In a surprise turn, Trump apologized for his father's antagonistic relationship with Sen.

Trump Jr.: This is fact. The conservative is passionate about politics and is not afraid to raise her voice to make her opinion heard. And the result is raw moments that are as authentic as they are viral.

Democratic presidential hopeful Tulsi Gabbard appeared on the show this week, getting into it with Behar when the host suggested that Gabbard might be an "unwitting" asset of Russia: "Not that that means you're stupid, but people can be used". "Being Black, I recognize Black face, this I can say". "I love hosting this show with you guys every day".

Also this week, actress/environmental activist Jane Fonda spoke about her recent arrests during protests to spur action on global warming. "We're the last generation between the life and death of the planet", she warned, and the conversation got serious from there.

Trump Jr.: This is not the fight I wanted. When Behar was about to say something, McCain interrupted her to say something sweet. "Obama was elected, and the first thing that was said to him from the other side was: "We're going to make sure you're a one-term president". This is part of being president.

There to tout his new book, "Triggered", the businessman fielded inquiries about hypocrisy, nepotism and character in politics as well as the questionable things his father has said and done.

After co-host Sunny Hostin brought up a portion of the July 25 phone call between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, in which Trump asked him to "do us a favor" by conducting an investigation into former Vice President Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden's Ukraine natural gas company, Trump Jr. shot back by falsely claiming no USA military aid was "withheld".

"You're at the White House", co-host Abby Huntsman shot back.
