MI hired Howard on May 22 to replace John Beilein, who left the Wolverines for the NBA's Cleveland Cavaliers.

MI landed the first big commitment of the Juwan Howard era on Thursday night as five-star forward Isaiah Todd vowed to join the Wolverines.

"I knew you have to recruit, but all the work that comes behind the recruiting". What we all do now is just text, right? "I've been on the phone sometimes with recruits for like 30 minutes". Howard initially scouted Todd during an AAU event in May.

"The new coaching staff with Juwan Howard, him being a former coach and player in the National Basketball Association, that was obviously appealing", Todd said, via Rivals.

Todd, who made the announcement at Word of God Christian Academy in Raleigh, North Carolina, chose MI over Kansas. "Big things are coming at MI". He is the top power forward - and No. 7 player overall - in the 2020 ESPN 100 recruit rankings. "I want to earn their trust", Juwan Howard said. Howard says the team is healthy at the moment.

As Howard noted, recruiting is a big part of his job - and it will likely play a significant role in his success or failure.

Howard's mold-breaking background as an National Basketball Association assistant with no college experience played a big role in Todd's recruitment and should bode well for Michigan's future. He said he remained in contact with Howard since he was offered a scholarship at MI in July.

"Michigan - this block "M" right here - it's a lovely university, one of the best institutions in the world", Howard said.
