Ocasio-Cortez told Sanders she would back him in a phone call while he was still in a Nevada hospital after a heart attack less than three weeks ago, aides to both confirmed, and news of her decision has been greeted as a welcome - and validating - shot of adrenaline inside his campaign.

Francesca Rheannon, a 70-year-old Long Islander carrying a Bernie placard, said prior to the rally that she does not view Warren negatively.

"Not only can Bernie win, Bernie will win", Moore added.

That makes the endorsements from Ocasio-Cortez, Omar, and other progressives so key, said Sanders, as "they are able to generate and are generating enormous support among young people, among people of color, among working class people all over this country".

"It wasn't until I heard of a man by the name of Bernie Sanders that I began to question, and assert, and recognize my inherent value as a human being that deserves health care, housing, education, and a living wage", she said, at the park just miles from her district.

He would raise taxes on the rich to pay for his plans, Sanders said, including through a wealth tax on those with a net worth of more than US$32 million.

Firebrand Democratic congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez endorsed presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders at a massive rally last Saturday that marked the septuagenarian's return to the campaign trail following a heart attack earlier this month.

Ocasio-Cortez's endorsement was reported earlier this week by the Washington Post.

"They want us to believe that the only reality that we can live under is the status quo - real change is impossible", Sanders said.

"When I was a baby, my family relied on Planned Parenthood for prenatal care", Ocasio-Cortez said.

Campaign cochair Turner, resplendent in a red gown, danced close to a Warren reference in her gospel-style oration. But the congresswoman offered no comment as to why she had bestowed her blessing on a male rather than a female presidential candidate.

In an interview with local news outlet NY1 ahead of the Queens rally, Sanders described Ocasio-Cortez as "one of the great political phenomenons in recent American history". "I am more than ready to take on the greed and corruption of the corporate elite and their apologists", Sanders told a gathering of thousands of people holding aloft placards at the Queensbridge Park.

"It's all of that and more", he said, adding that "virtually every credibly national poll" now has him defeating President Trump in a general election.

"For me, this is not about 'Why not any other candidate?' " Ocasio-Cortez said. We are not going to spend too much time talking about a racist, demagogue, xenophobic, paper-throwing, president.

He spoke for almost an hour highlighting racial disparities in wealth, health outcomes, climate change and criminal sentencing.

Sanders has alsoreceivedthe endorsement of two other members of the Squad-Reps. (Though she never used the word "endorse" on stage, she later made it explicit on Twitter.) Rep. Ilhan Omar, a Democrat from Minnesota, also backed Sanders this week.

Democratic presidential candidates are seen before the start of the Democratic Presidential Debate at Otterbein University on October 15, 2019 in Westerville, Ohio.

The capacity for the rally was 20,000, but so many people came the campaign had to turn people away, said Sanders. Despite raising $25.3 million during the third quarter, national polling data compiled by ABC affiliate FiveThirtyEight shows Sanders backsliding in numerous polls, falling just short of Massachusetts Sen.
