Disney's new Maleficent: Mistress of Evil topped the North American box office for the weekend with an estimated take of US$36 million (S$49.11 million) despite falling far below the original 2014 film, an industry group reported Sunday.

Cathleen Taff, who heads Disney's theatrical distribution said that while its performance wasn't as the company had hoped in the US, "most encouraging is the fact that audiences seem to be responding very positively". Box office experts had previously predicted that the movie would open with about $45 million for the first weekend. Worldwide, it's earned US$737.5m ($1.15b), and has already surpassed the lifetime grosses of Justice League and Suicide Squad.

"It's already in territory that nobody thought it would get to". "Even if the box office stopped right now it's an absolute, unqualified success".

The comedy-horror-action movie stars Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg and Emma Stone facing off against zombies, fellow survivors and family strife.

"Three films earning over US$25m ($39m), that doesn't happen very often", Dergarabedian noted, although the weekend is down from a year ago when "Halloween" opened to over US$76m ($119m).

And buzzy, awards-friendly indies are continuing to thrive.

Internationally, the film added an estimated $33.4 million this weekend bringing its global tally to $118.7 million.

The Warner Bro's picture garnered one of the highest October box office opening weekends. The actress did not elaborate on her struggle but we know she has been through some hard times. We're racing to the finish line here.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at USA and Canadian theatres, according to Comscore. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.
