Game 5 on Friday is scheduled to be the Yankees' last home game of the series, making this potentially Sabathia's last home appearance of his career and possibly the last pitching appearance of his career.

By removing him from the ALCS roster, Sabathia is ineligible for the World Series if the Yankees were to rally from their 3-1 deficit to Houston.

Pitching in relief Thursday night in Game 4 of the ALCS, Sabathia "suffered a subluxation of his left shoulder joint", the team said in a statement on Friday. Head athletic trainer Steve Donahue came to the mound and Sabathia tried a warmup toss, hoping somehow to push through, but he had to leave.

Fans chanted Sabathia's name as he limped off the field with tears in his eyes.

BRAVES: First baseman Freddie Freeman had arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow after a nagging injury that limited him late in the season and into playoffs.

Sabathia said he feels at peace. Waking up, I didn't sleep that good. "Makes me feel good. I love this organization".

We should not be surprised that Sabathia literally left it all out on the mound.

"I was in a pretty good amount of pain last night and today". "Because the way I've been feeling - loving the bullpen and jogging out, feeling pretty good - I feel like about July of next year I would've been like, 'I can pitch.' The way I feel now I obviously can't. I threw until I couldn't anymore".

"That man gave his all", outfielder Aaron Judge told reporters. Whether all of that makes him a Hall of Famer is up for debate. "He means a lot to this team, a lot to his organization, and for him to go out like that, it's not something you want".

"It stinks", reliever Zack Britton talked about. "I don't know what I did but it's pretty sore and the pain has been pretty intense since that pitch".

In perhaps his last game ever for the Yankees, the veteran left-hander left the field due to a shoulder injury.

Sabathia announced in spring training that he would retire at the end of the 2019 season and has shown no signs of wavering from that decision. He announced before the season that this was going to be his past year, and he made four trips to the injured list caused by his balky right knee, repaired by surgeries after the 2010 season, in July 2014 and again after the 2016 and '18 seasons. "And I kind of felt like I was in control all the time and that was just the best part about it is 50,000 people in the Bronx and s-- don't start until I'm ready".
