Rumour: Next-gen Mercedes-AMG C63 to get 4-cylinder hybrid

The engine is said to be an electrified version of the turbocharged 2.0-litre M139 engine that powers the A45 AMG.

Replacing the thundering V8, says a report from Autocar, will be the turbocharged four-cylinder from the AMG A 45 S hot hatch, which has already earned accolades for being one of the most powerful four-cylinders ever built. The maximum torque is expected to hit 750 Nm (553 lb-ft), and the EQ-Boost add-on will draw power from the 48V on-board battery to grant the auto an additional 250 Nm (184 lb-ft) when necessary. The engine could be paired to a 9-speed automatic gearbox and an all-wheel drive system. Well, the publication suggests the four-cylinder hybrid powertrain will match the current V8's peak figure of 375 kW, with the electric boost function pushing maximum torque to around 750 N.m. These refinements will also allegedly grace the other AMG model said to get this high-performance four-banger, the GLC, in both its crossover and coupe-over forms.

We're due for a new generation of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class in the next couple of years and when its inevitable, tire-toasting AMG variant arrives, it'll reportedly come without the V-8 you've come to expect.
