Our planet is having its second-warmest year on record in 2019

The average global land and ocean surface temperature for September was 1.71 degrees Fahrenheit higher than the average for the 20th century, according to the findings NOAA released Wednesday.

According to a report by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the month of September 2019 continued a long-running trend of a warming global climate. That makes it the highest for September - tied with September 2015 - since records began in 1880. Only a few places have recorded below average stats, including the central and northern United States.

In keeping with human-caused global warming trends, all of the top 10 hottest years on record have occurred since 2005, with the exception of one - 1998 - when an unusually intense El Niño provided a major natural boost to global temperatures, added on top of long-term human-caused warming. This year marked the 43rd consecutive September to have temperatures above the 20th century average, and in fact, it's the 417th consecutive month - period - with above-average temperatures.

-The U.S. had its second warmest September on record, but combining the data with the rest of the continent indicates that North America had its warmest September on record.

-The Arctic sea ice coverage (extent) for September was the third lowest on record. For the first nine months of the year, NOAA says 2019 is the second warmest on record behind 2016. The Arctic reached its annual minimum sea ice extent on September 18 at 1.6 million square miles, which marked the end of the melt season. NASA and NOAA use slightly different methods for their analysis.

The annual temperature rankings display a snapshot of climate change. While other agencies ranked the month as the second warmest behind 2015 or 2016, all agree it was among the three warmest Septembers on record.
