Porsche unveils the mid-range Taycan 4S EV

Porsche has released the most affordable version of its first-ever electric vehicle, the Taycan 4S, ahead of its arrival Down Under late in 2020. Both models will arrive to United States dealerships in spring of 2020.

Customers who settle for the regular battery pack have 429 horsepower and 472 pound-feet of torque at their disposal, though the hp figure grows to 522 with launch control engaged.

The Taycan 4S will be offered with two power levels.

Porsche hasn't confirmed what will sit below the 4S, or if indeed such a model exists, but given the 4S name we'd suggest a cheaper two-wheel drive 2S could slot in beneath the model you see here going forward.

Porsche said that the 4S will come in two battery sizes, 79.2 and 93.4 kWh, and it will deliver more subdued performance and slightly better range than the other Taycan variants. Both variants accelerate to 60 miles per hour in just 3.8 seconds, with a top speed of 155 miles per hour. In other words, a pair of electric motors - one at the front, one at the rear - essentially give the Taycan all-wheel drive. Just as with the Turbo and Turbo S, DC fast charging at 400 volts only works up to 50 kw and you'll need to check an option box to boost it to 150 kw. That's a whopping $47,100 and $40,520 less than the Taycan Turbo, and it leaves a span from the 4S to the Turbo S of $81,200-before the potential to load tens of thousands of dollars of options. As standard, the Taycan 4S features adaptive air suspension with three-chamber technology including electronic damper control PASM (Porsche Active Suspension Management).

The Taycan 4S has six-piston fixed-calipers in red on the front axle and four-piston calipers in red on the rear axle, with internally vented cast iron brake rotors.

Taycan drivers in the US can stay charged up thanks to a three-pronged infrastructure strategy: free 30-minute charging sessions for three years at Electrify America sites nationwide, DC fast chargers at Porsche dealerships, and home charging to start every day with a charged battery. The front fascia with new geometry, side skirts and rear diffuser in black ensure further visual differentiation. Partial leather upholstery is offered as standard, as well as front comfort seats with eight-way electric adjustment. LED headlamps and dynamic lamps are included. And like other Taycans, the 4S can be had with an entirely leather-free interior.

The previously-unveiled Turbo and Turbo S models start at $152,250 and $186,350, respectively, after the aforementioned destination charge.

On sale now across the nation, the 2020 Porsche Taycan 4S starts at $105,150 when fitted with the Performance Battery, and $111,730 with the Performance Battery Plus.
