It means the world's developer community will be able to launch apps and services for Volvos - and the new infotainment system will benefit from over-the-air updates so the tech improves over time.

Volvo says that the electric XC40 will be the first Volvo to receive software and OS updates over the air. The two companies have been development partners for the past several years. That's about to change starting next week, as the electric Volvo XC40 will become the first vehicle to get such a feature, straight from the factory.

"We are finally giving you the same experience in your auto that you're used to on your phone, but adapted for safe interaction while driving", said CTO Henrik Green. If the new OS can keep the simplicity and ease of use combined with new and improved features, it could be on to a victor.

The new infotainment system will also be integrated with Volvo's own Volvo On Call app that offers remote functions, such as pre-heating the auto, locating it in a parking lot, and even sharing it via a digital key. This will allow Volvo to update the auto with new features and functionality over time, just as Tesla does. Volvo notes that it's Android Automotive OS infotainment system allows millions of developers to run apps that are tailored to the vehicle.

Google Assistant integration allows users to control functions in the auto using their voice.

This integration contributes to reducing driver distraction, helping drivers keep their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road.

Google Assistant and Google Maps will be particularly useful for owners. Google Maps data will help improve the XC40's driver assistance by identifying curves and speed limits.

This same rich and fresh map data will be used to improve the capabilities of the XC40's Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) by providing important information such as speed limits and curves in the road to the auto.

In addition to using Google's services and applications from the Android app store, the system also features Volvo On Call suite of services, which includes remote locking/unlocking, battery status monitoring, and cabin pre-heating.
